Roll on the 18th/19th September. This is when four teams climb the Zugspitze, Hanwag’s local peak and Germany’s highest mountain, by four completely different routes simultaneously. The Hanwag Alpine Experience has become a permanent institution on the summer alpine events calendar. Customers, media representatives and lucky competition winners from all over the world head to Bavaria for few days in September to learn more about the Hanwag brand and climb the Zugspitze together over two days via the Reintal, Stopselzieher, Höllental and Jubiläumsgrat (Jubilee Arête). Each of the four routes is as unique, different and varied as the seventy-odd participants. Hanwag makes it possible for mountain enthusiasts with completely different levels of experience and fitness to reach the summit. After all, the Zugspitze is especially important to Hanwag. As a Bavarian bootmaker, it has always had a strong connection to the mountain. In 2011, as part of the company’s 90-year anniversary celebrations, Hanwag donated a bivouac shelter to the Deutscher Alpenverein (German Alpine Club) which now lies on the Zugspitze’s most demanding route – the Jubiläumsgrat (Jubilee Arête). It also plays a role in the Hanwag Alpine Experience 2017 as the “Jubigrat” team spend the night here en route from the Alpspitze to the Zugspitze.
Last year’s ascents were hit by bad weather. Shortly before the Hanwag Alpine Experience was due to start, conditions deteriorated so dramatically that only the Reintal route remained possible. Right from the start, the Hanwag Alpine Experience has been run together with the Mountain Elements mountaineering school team. Despite pouring rain and heavy snow, all participants in the 2016 event reached the summit of the Zugspitze safe and sound. This year, the organisers are hoping for better weather to make it possible to climb all four Hanwag Alpine Experience routes in 2017.

FOUR ROUTES, ONE BOOT: MAKRA COMBI
For the Hanwag Alpine Experience 2017, the particularly lightweight, yet sturdy Hanwag MAKRA Combi GTX® is the perfect all-rounder. It’s ideal for alpine routes with or without glacier crossings. Weighing 590 grams (size 7), it’s somewhat lighter than the popular Hanwag FERRATA COMBI, yet offers nearly comparable performance. Underfoot, the aggressive sole provides excellent grip on rock, while the particularly soft fabric collar gives the MAKRA COMBI extra comfort on mountain ascents and descents. The high-quality Cordura® upper with reinforcing stitching and nylon insole at the heart of the boot provide the required stiffness and support for secure footwork. And the GORE-TEX® lining will keep feet reliably dry in pouring rain, or snow and ice. The MAKRA COMBI is available in a men’s and women’s version.
