We’ve been following our trail for over 90 years.
Our values became tradition, our commitment became passion.
Born in Bavaria. Worn around the world.
We’re excited to see where the trail leads.
Since 1921, Hanwag has been continually evolving. New techniques, new functions, new trends and new requirements have all left their mark. Tradition plays a very important role and we still uphold our original values. However, now more than ever, innovation is a driving force for Hanwag developers and employees. We are designing and developing new models, such as the BENDIGO and CALPA featuring our innovative TubeTec technology. And we continue to further improve tried-and tested classics, as we have done this season with the popular Hanwag TATRA. For Spring / Summer 2018, Hanwag is proud to present the TATRA II and – for treks with a lighter pack and hiking – the TATRA LIGHT.
Sometimes a fresh perspective can help you explore new directions. This is why the Hanwag Research & Development team invited the newly formed Hanwag “Women’s Alliance” to be part of the development process for the Spring / Summer 2018 models. Three women with different outdoor experience, different requirements and different opinions provide important input on the colour, form and function of the Hanwag women’s models. The results inform our new ALPINE, TREKKING and TRAVEL categories. For Every Woman, Every Terrain, Every Adventure.
Designed by women for women: Hanwag with additional female input for its Spring / Summer 2018 women’s models.
Finding the perfect fit is the most important criteria when choosing new footwear. Destination, terrain, function, colour and design also play an important role. Outdoor women are particularly demanding when it comes to choosing their hiking shoes and mountain boots. The starting point for every Hanwag women’s model are the special Hanwag women’s lasts that are the result of decades of expertise and experience. They guarantee a fit specially designed for the female anatomy. In order to design Hanwag mountain boots with functionality, form, colours and designs more suitable and attractive to women and to fit female feet better, the Hanwag R&D team brought in additional female support for the Spring / Summer 2018 collection. With the founding members of the “Women’s Alliance”, Petra Thaller, Magdalena Kalus and Anja Kaiser, Hanwag now have three very confident, outdoor women with very different backgrounds involved in developing new products.
Hanwag has supported Petra Thaller and her organisation Outdoor Against Cancer for a number of years now. Petra has two adult children and publishes the online magazine Mountains4U. She was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago. Petra organises outdoor events for cancer patients across Europe. Outdoor Against Cancer is the world’s only organisation that offers prevention, support and rehabilitation all together.
“Good equipment is essential for outdoor activities. Throughout all my years in the outdoor industry, on expeditions or working with cancer patients, having the right footwear has had a crucial impact on whether it’s been a good day or a bad day.” says Petra Thaller. “I’ve known the Hanwag team for a good while and we have always worked well together. I’m delighted to be officially involved in the development process for the new women’s models and that Hanwag is offering more than just financial support for Outdoor Against Cancer.”
Magdalena (Maggy) Kalus and Anja Kaiser, outdoor bloggers from “YouAreAnAdventureStory.com” are popular industry influencers due to their reports from a wide range of outdoor activities and their honest, up-front way of communicating. As part of the Hanwag “Women’s Alliance”, they represent a target group of young, dynamic women who enjoy spending their weekends in the mountain alongside their busy full-time jobs.
Petra, Maggy and Anja were present at three important meetings with the Hanwag Research & Development team between October 2017 and April 2018 to take part in key decisions: which colours and designs are best, which models should be reworked and which details are required to fit women’s specific anatomies. During lively discussions, prototypes were discussed, materials were chosen and the final products for the Spring/ Summer 2018 collection were decided on. And that’s just the beginning. The Hanwag R&D team plans to continue tapping into female outdoor expertise and experience and build up a long-term network of women influencers and decision makers to provide feedback on Hanwag’s women’s models and further strengthen the brand in this respect.
Innovative sole construction: Hanwag is blazing new trails with its new TubeTec technology for the HIKE category.
A new sole construction with big advantages. The innovative Hanwag TubeTec technology has been meticulously thought through down to the smallest detail. TubeTec is used in the BENDIGO and CALPA models – the latest additions to the Hanwag Spring / Summer 2018 collection in the HIKE category. Designed and manufactured in Europe, this innovative new technology delivers perfect cushioning and stability for multifunctional use. These two low-cut sporty, models have modern designs that combine high comfort with lightweight upper constructions, reinforced by injected TPU.
Andreas Settele, Head of Research & Development at Hanwag explains the advantages of the TubeTec construction:
What’s the idea behind TubeTec?
The vision was to create a sole offering excellent, long-lasting cushioning while being extremely stable at the same time. With our cemented construction method we want to offer a perfect and enduring fitas well as developping and producing the new technology exclusively in Europe. For the perfect cushioning we are using a PU midsole material. PU is particularly soft and sensitive, which means it is also less stable than other shock absorbing materials. To make it suitable for demanding outdoor use, we developed a TPU “tube” that protects the softer, less robust PU sole from mechanical damage, whilst also providing the required stability.
How is TubeTec technology constructed?
For our midsole, we created a TPU “tube” which provides the required stability and robustness. This is “filled” with particularly soft and cushioning PU material. We have re-engineered the insole, which is the main element in ourproduction (cemented construction), and the foundation for all our sole constructions, so that it is now consisting of two different materials, being particularly flexible at the ball of the foot and under the toes. Finally, this is followed by an outsole, which has two distinct sections. Thanks to the innovative Hanwag 3D PrismBase technology it has a particularly lightweight design and the specially developed rubber compound offers perfect grip and traction.
What advantages does TubeTec bring?
TubeTec is the key for adapting shock-absorbing PU to make it suitable for outdoor use. Thanks to the TPU “tube”, the sole is robust, longlasting and stable. PU offers excellent, long-lasting cushioning. Designed and manufacture exclusively in Europe, we use it in the BENDIGO and CALPA models. Thanks to their cemented construction, the same as all Hanwag models, these shoes have a perfect, long-lasting fit and are particularly stable and fully resoleable.
Which activities and which target group are the BENDIGO & CALPA designed for?
Our new BENDIGO and CALPA models for Spring / Summer 2018 are exclusively equipped with TubeTec. Both the sole construction and upper are lightweight, comfortable and multifunctional. This makes them ideal for shorter hikes on trails in the woods or out in the hills and mountains on the weekends or after work with friends, partners or the kids. Above all, the BENDIGO and CALPA are designed for versatile use in outdoor areas and active everyday outdoor lifestyles.
Hanwag has reworked its popular TATRA trekking boot for Spring / Summer 2018 and added a lightweight, sportive version: TATRA LIGHT.
Leather, metal eyelets, a waterproof and breathable membrane, laces... the Hanwag TATRA GTX® is made of more than 25 different materials. In fact, these boots contain 110 individual parts and the Hanwag team needs 106 separate steps to make them. They remain a much-loved classic from the Hanwag TREKKING line that wins over wearers with its perfect, comfortable fit, stability and flexibility. For Spring / Summer 2018, the TATRA has now been updated. And there’s more too. With the new TATRA LIGHT, the Hanwag Research & Development team under the lead of Andreas Settele has developed a little sister for the TATRA II. It has a particularly lightweight, flexible design and is perfect for short hikes with a lightweight pack.
Making a trekking boot, such as the TATRA is a complex process. From getting all the different materials ready, to cutting and stitching the upper, to lasting the boot with a cemented construction – there are hundreds of details that all have to be developed, evaluated, performed and checked. This requires a high level of handcrafted expertise . When the Hanwag R&D team decided to overhaul the TATRA, they paid particular attention to these details. New Click Clamp eyelets, a tongue lace hook, a new, more comfortable footbed and an embroidered logo – these are all small, but important changes to the new TATRA II.
Designing the TATRA LIGHT is in no way intended to replace the TATRA. It’s more a matter of Hanwag wanting to offer a lighter model that provides a solution for TREK LIGHT activities, i.e. (day) hikes, shorter treks with a lightweight pack on and off trail. The decisive factor here is the extremely lightweight, shock absorbing sole construction thanks to its Hanwag Integral Light sole. It features Hanwag’s proprietary 3D PrismBase technology and a completely new structure in the rubber foundation that reduces overall weight by up to 32% (compared to the rubber base of the previous outsole). There’s a TPU frame at the AW Integral sole and softer PU for superior cushioning that makes no sacrifices on stability. A further highlight of the TATRA LIGHT is the ergonomic upper construction made possible by new Hanwag LFX technology. Its special design enables uppers to move with greater lateral flex together with and at the same time as the lower leg axis. This promotes correct axial motion when walking and is easy on the joints.
Andreas Settele, Head of R&D Hanwag on the new TATRA LIGHT:
„Hanwag Integral Light sole construction, VIBRAM Integral Light outsole with Hanwag 3D PrismBase technology and LFX technology in the upper construction – the new TATRA LIGHT for Spring / Summer 2018 has a whole raft of new technologies and developments. With only 1,200 gramm / pair and a great perfomace we‘ve developed a product for sportive hikers and mountaineers. My very personal highlight of our Spring / Summer 2018 collection.“
The development process involved working closely with outdoor industry female opinion formers from the Hanwag “Women’s Alliance” to focus in detail on how we develop and design the women’s models, the TATRA II LADY and the TATRA LIGHT LADY. The result: functional adjustments that correspond to the specific requirements of the female anatomy, such as the new cuff that tapers off and is deeper at the back as women’s calves start lower than men’s. And there are new colours and details that will appeal to sporty women.
